We will return to Nuada focused news next week.

We adore Mr. Wink but we are not talking about a Bethmoorian Troll, we are talking about cyber bully trolls.

With the tragic news last week of another teen feeling they had no way out of being cyber-bullied then to take their own life, we thought we would take today to tell our story. We are mothers ourselves and have many families and teens visit the Nuada Petition Site… we want people to know that it can happen to anyone.

The anonymity and the feeling of being untouchable that the internet provides can create a detachment, both from reality and from the thought that behind the text is a real person. That is a dangerous scenario and while freedom of speech is one thing, it should not be used to abuse or attack or hurt individuals.

Since we started HRE we have met so many wonderful people on various social outlets, it’s been a very welcoming and positive experience. But we are not immune… we have had our own “CB-troll” attacks on us personally. In our case, the “CB-troll” masqueraded as a caring person and started with subtle manipulation, that turned to demands and finally abusive behavior. We became the recipient of their negative force. Rumors, lies and nasty comments became common place. They positioned themselves as the victim – with the intent to hurt us and put them at the center of attention.

Fortunately we have wonderful support in our lives and with the site, and that has allowed us to remain focused on what is important and although the attacks were hurtful, that support has given us the strength to ignore the harassment.

We are NOT experts by any means, and there are many sites out there that tell you how to handle a Cyber Bully/Troll, what we found was the best solution, for us, was to ignore the them – ANY feedback would give them the attention they seek.

Ignoring is NOT easy, and they rarely stop right away. They are verbal, public and far reaching and it can feel personally devastating. Although it may seem like you are allowing them to say these terrible things but by ignoring them, you’re not. It’s like taking air from a flame – it will eventually flicker out.

One of the best things we learned during our own experience is if you are being attacked or hurt by a “CB-Troll” please do NOT suffer in silence! Tell your friends, a family member, a trusted teacher, or your religious leader about what’s going on

On the other side, if you have a friend or family member come to you with a “CB-Troll” problem, Listen… some may feel that “well it’s just online”. Online or not – it is real. Online has become as much a part of our social network as face to face interactions. Just because its online doesn’t make it any less impactful and it does affect people VERY deeply.

Please be safe and know that there are FAR more good people in this world than bad… sometimes they just don’t shout as loud.

General characteristics of a Cyber-Bully Troll

  • CB-Trolls are immune to criticism and logical arguments. True trolls cannot be reasoned with, regardless of how sound your logical argument is.

  • CB-Trolls do not feel remorse like you and me. They have sociopathic tendencies, and accordingly, they delight in other people having hurt feelings.

  • CB-Trolls consider themselves separate from the social order.

  • CB-Trolls consider themselves above social responsibility.

  • CB-Trolls gain energy by you insulting them, when you get angry and even if you just talk about them

  • CB-The only way to deal with a troll is to ignore them.
