CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

Over the last two decades, writer-director Guillermo del Toro has mapped out a territory in the popular imagination that is uniquely his own, astonishing audiences with Cronos, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and a host of other films and creative endeavors. Now, for the first time, del Toro reveals the inspirations behind his signature artistic motifs, sharing the contents of his personal notebooks, collections, and other obsessions. DETAILS

The amount of detail that went into every part of Hellboy 2 is a stunning display of talent and creativity. From the big to the unseen, so much goes into what we see, thing we don’t even realize all that had to happen to make us believe.

Prince Nuada’s facial prosthetic was so thin (and the glue so sticky) that it took hours to apply it smoothly.

“It was a lot of work that included five to seven hours per day of getting ready to look like him and to officially become Nuada. The makeup was extensive, but only on my face and very thin. The painting was so delicate. The makeup guy couldn’t speed it up it was so intricate. Then there was forty minutes a day getting the costume on because there was more than one and since it was all authentic and leather work. It was a long process. It was a real slice of my life to make Nuada come to life for sure. ~Luke Goss

LIFECAST

Have a look at the beautiful sculpture that was used for Nuada. The face and neckpiece were sculpted by Dave Grasso over a lifecast of Luke Goss.

The face was from an existing concept, but the neckpiece Dave deigned himself. Guillermo del Toro had wanted an ornate collar for Nuada’s costume.

This is the facial appliance and neck piece sculpture for Nuada’s final makeup. What we normally do is paint the actor’s lifecast with acrylic paint the same color as the clay. This helps us blend the clay to the lifecast so we don’t see 2 different colors ( the clay and the white plaster lifecast.) Then we separate the facial sculpt and the neck sculpt and place them on individual face and neck pieces, then we mold those. From those molds we generate the foam latex appliances that are later glued down to his face and made up. The neck was also foam latex and worn as a piece of his costume. ~ Dave Grasso

A WINK AND A ROAR

I put a lot of work into that head, as did Bud McGrew, who came up with an interesting jaw-hinging mechanism which allowed the jaw to swing from side to side. The real challenge with the head was its unusual shape. It’s got a long upper lip and tusks that are close to the corners of his mouth. With a creature like that, you want to be able to open its mouth into a big roar, so you need some skin to be able to stretch and open up into that big expression. So having those tusks so close to the corner of his mouth made it really challenging to come up with something that would open to a big expressive shape but not tear the foam in that area. ~ Mario Torres

COLORS

Even the colors. Color can dramatically affect moods, feelings, and emotions. It is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and cause physiological reactions. With that, Guillermo del Toro started with a break down of the color pallet that the world of Hellboy 2 would be saturated in.

As always, I color-, texture-, and shape-coded the movie, gave general guidelines to all the artists involved, and let them have fun.~Guillermo del Toro
